GOVT ANNOUNCES BUILDER OF WICKHAM INTERCHANGE

In a move that shows the Baird government is determined to push ahead cutting the rail in to Newcastle, Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian has today announced a $73-million contract for the construction of the Wickham interchange has been awarded.

Laing O’Rourke Construction Australia has won the job to build the train, bus and light rail interchange.

From Boxing Day, all Hunter line, Sydney and Central Coast services will terminate at Broadmeadow, with buses ferrying passengers to Newcastle.

The new Wickham interchange should be built by late 2016, with the promise of a light rail service to commence construction late next year.

Earlier today, a Parliamentary Committee headed by Reverend Fred Nile, looking into the planning processes for Newcastle, released an interim report saying the line in to Newcastle should not be truncated on Boxing Day.
