Four people have been rescued from a yacht that began sinking after it ran into an unidentified object about 14 nautical miles east of Evans Head near Yamba.
A mayday call went out at about 3am with the merchant tanker British Loyalty diverting to pick up the sailors about two hours later.
It is unclear what the yacht hit, but the boat quickly started taking in water and is expected to sink in the coming days. Conditions are rough with 30 knot winds and two to three metre seas.
