Parts of the southern Myall Lakes National Park as well the river at Tamboy, north of Newcastle, are closed after lightning strikes sparked bushfires.
At Neath near Cessnock, fire crews tackled an outbreak burning on three fronts.
Residents were put on notice and roads were closed as shifting winds caused the blaze to change direction.
Firefighters are bracing for another round of outbreaks, with more storms expected this evening.
