After record high temperatures yesterday, a ferocious storm walloped the Hunter last night, leaving 10,000 homes without power for several hours.
Newcastle and Lake Macquarie were hardest hit by the blackouts, driving rain and very strong winds.
3,750 lightning strikes were detected within a 100 kilometre radius of Newcastle by Global Position and Tracking Systems, which records data for the Bureau of Meteorology.
It was a dream come true for keen photographers and storm chasers who captured the storms, as mother nature put on a spectacular light show.
