Animal rescuers have lost a battle to save a risso dolphin south of Newcastle, after it beached itself yesterday afternoon.
Volunteers from ORRCA joined locals in caring for the animal, and initially, signs were promising.
But just after 7:30pm its condition quickly deteriorated, and it died a short time later.
The dolphin has been taken to Taronga Zoo to determine the cause of death.
