MY WEEK AT NBN NEWS

At six years of age I had a goal to work for NBN news.

With a pretend foam microphone attached to my oversized blazer pocket and a homemade NBN badge of authenticity, I didn’t expect to find myself now on work experience at NBN for the week.

The week has been a whirlwind of news, live production and behind the scenes. As a Communication student at the University of Newcastle I was nervous to apply theory to practice.

On Monday I tried to take in as much as possible, and by the afternoon I was excited for the next four days ahead. What I would tell my six year old self now however, would be to remember you won’t always have a mic in your hand and a camera rolling.

Instead, you’ll be learning how to do a little bit of everything.  From video editing, online blogging and live TV production, the job certainly keeps you on your feet.

I can’t recommend enough for any current or future Communication student that starting to gain experience early is the key to mapping out your goals for the future.

Now finishing my week at NBN I’m not sure if I’m quite ready to leave, or if my six-year old self is either.
