TREE CHECKS AFTER GUM FALLS ON CAR

The University of Newcastle is checking trees across its campus after a large gum tree fell on top of a car this morning.

The large gum tree fell onto one of the uni’s fleet cars between 6.30 and 6.45 this morning. No-one was injured. It’s thought recent strong winds and rain contributed to the tree toppling over.

The area has been cordoned off, and the gum tree will be removed when classes finish this afternoon.

A spokesperson for the university says the fallen gum tree had a termite infestation that wasn’t visible above the ground.

University staff are working with an arborist to inspect other trees on the site.

The uni says potentially unsafe trees will be removed.
