Newcastle Knights star Darius Boyd is seeking help for depression in a mental health clinic.

The 27-year-old was admitted to the clinic earlier this week. It follows news that he was responsible for damaging a room at a Hunter Valley resort last week. A TV was smashed, a hole put in a wall and glass was smashed at the Vintage in Rothbury. Boyd is reported to have paid a sum of about $1500 to the resort.

“We are ensuring Darius gets the best possible care and treatment at this time,” CEO Matt Gidley said on Wednesday.

“Depression is a serious illness in our society and we are pleased Darius has taken the first step in his recovery by acknowledging he needs help.

“Football is secondary at this point, it is important Darius’ focus is entirely on his treatment.”

The Knights have not put a timeframe on Boyd’s return to the game.
