September 18, 2012 at 10:54 am
Time to delve into the vault again as we look back on 50 years of NBN television.
In 1997 there was an announcement that would change the face of Newcastle forever.
BHP was to close its steelworks and NBN’s cameramen and journalists covered the story from every angle.
These clips are from an NBN Documentary titled The Last Whistle, presented by Helen Kapalos and shot by Glenn Cook and Michael Rauch.
It also features BHP Veteran Aubrey Brooks.

Great job Paul, thanks NBN for your support ,
Thirteen years ago the unthinkable happened. BHP steelworks closed its operations in Newcastle.
The steelworks had been an integral part of Newcastle’s life for 84 years, helping to shape a proud, working-class people.
For many thousands, the steelworks offered good money and a chance to give their families a decent standard of living and a better future in life.
Many feared what the future would hold. A future without BHP in Newcastle was hard to imagine.
Aubrey.
