ICONIC REGAL CINEMA TO RE-OPEN
August 7, 2012 at 6:06 pm
The Regal Cinema in Newcastle could be showing films again as early as next year, after a community fight to re-open the cinema since its closure in 2006.
Newcastle Council has signed contracts to hand over ownership of the Regal Cinema to the Regal Cinema Building Trust.
The iconic movie theatre is expected to re-open again in early 2013 and will play a mix of new, old, foreign and art house films.
Future City Director Judy Jaeger says the local community had never given up hope that the cinema could be resurrected.
“The Regal is a much loved institution, in an iconic Newcastle building. The process to get to this point has been a long one and I am sure that the patrons of the Regal are keen to see the movies rolling here once again.”
Lord Mayor John Tate will hand over the keys to the Regal on Friday.
