An internationally-renowned arborist has criticised Newcastle Council’s assessment of the Laman Street figs.

Mike Ellison says he doesn’t believe the trees pose a high risk to pedestrians or traffic, but council isn’t interested in his opinion.

  1. What a joke, basically a paid holiday courtesey of Save Our FIgs. Is anyone aware of Ellisons visa conditions? I have reported this to Immigration as I am certain he would be violating a tourist visa by completing paid work.

Maybe Save our Figs will pay his fine?

  2. So this guy is getting a free holiday investigation by the tax office and immigration is in order?

  3. Here’s hoping Newcastle Council management and elected councillors get another inkling from this report of how stupid they look. Felling these trees isn’t going to be a win for anyone but the stubborn council team who have pushed this – and here’s hoping it follows them forever.

  4. Newcastle Council management has never shown such great interest in public safety, or in complying with it’s insurance agreements.Yet this is the reason given for chopping the figs, safety.
Now, when an arborist of distinction provides a conflicting opinion, he is bureaucratically ignored.

  5. Ellison did not even properly inspect the trees, he took some photos from a distance with a low resolution camera. No root inspection, no radar, no physical inspection of the trees, yet he was prepared to say they where safe? The guy sounds criminally negligent to me!

  6. Newcastle Council management might like to consider the 2yrs that the pedestrian crossings at Sandgate Cemetary corner(Wallsend Rd/Pacific Hwy), and Croudace Rd and Newcastle Rd. just by the Housos; have been in almost invisible condition, greatly endangering pedestrians. If only Mr. Ellison was in charge of NCC Works we might see some reality there.

  7. amidst these 14 fig trees there is a 15th tree. a small, roughly 2 year old hills fig, in itsown brown fence jutting out into Laman st & next to the pedestrian crossing extending from the Civic park side. so we have a fig tree replanted into the rd in a ridiculously hazardous location. but it is the 14 trees over arching the road that pose the greater road safety risk??!

  8. When will these DOPES learn? These TREES are not only a part of Newcastle but also living, breathing entities,if they (they being the FOOLS & EEDJITS that run NCC!!) insist upon harming OUR environment, instead of being those that are responsible for running our environment they will be those culpable for ruining our environment & ’tis hoping that I am that when they so deservedly BURN IN HELL that ’tis the wood from these gorgeous trees that keeps on roasting them ETERNALLY!!

  9. Hey!!
Let’s keep things in perspective, shall we??Just who was it that was responsible for NOT allowing Mr.Ellison reasonable access to these beautiful trees? W-a-i-t f-o-r i-t!!YES Dear Readers you have guessed correctly!!Da NCC!! (Da Numbskull C–nts Corporation!!
