July 2, 2010 at 6:11 pm
A Sydney courtroom erupted in applause today, after a Catholic priest was handed a gaol term of up to 20 years for sexual abuse.
John Sidney Denham assaulted dozens of boys aged five to 16 in the 1970s and 80s, mostly during his time at Newcastle’s St Pius X High School.
A sense of relief and justice flowed out of the Downing Centre Court, with victims, their families and supporters claiming victory after decades of hurt.
67 year old Denham’s sentence carries a non-parole period of 13 years, 10 months.
