OPERATION SAFE RETURN BEGINS
January 22, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Police patrols on the Pacific Highway will be stepped up over the long weekend with motorists urged to slow down as double demerit points come into force from midnight.
Highway traffic is expected to be heavy as holiday makers return home after the end of the school holidays.
As part of Operation Safe Return extra police will target speeding, seatbelt and drink driving offences.
Motorists are being reminded to plan their trips and take regular rest breaks to avoid fatigue.
Last year’s long weekend road toll was the lowest since World War II.
