$10,000 WORTH OF RAZOR BLADES FOUND IN VEHICLE STOP

A 26-year-old Lithuanian man will face a mid north coast court next month, charged with stealing $10,000 worth of razors and blades from supermarkets in the region. Police uncovered the stash in an unregistered car, during a traffic stop on the Pacific Highway at Forster, just after midday yesterday. In total, officers seized more than 270 packaged razors and blades. It’s alleged the items were stolen from supermarkets in areas including Jesmond, Mayfield, Raymond Terrace, Green Hills and Lake Innes. The man was arrested yesterday afternoon and taken to Forster Police Station where charged with having goods suspected of being stolen. He was given strict conditional bail, and had his passport seized, and will appear before Forster Local Court on February 22.

WOMAN DIES IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A woman has died in a single vehicle crash in Medowie, near Port Stephens today. Emergency services were called to the intersection of Abundance Drive and Lisadell Road at about 10.50am, following reports of a crash. Initial investigations suggest the woman was travelling east on Lisadell Road, when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree. The driver, a 71-year-old woman, died at the scene. Police are urging witnesses to the crash to come forward.

AUSTRALIA WARMER THAN AVERAGE IN 2016

Australia was warmer than average in 2016, with a national mean temperature 0.87 °C above average, and it was the fourth-warmest year on record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Annual Climate Statement.   The country clocked its fourth-warmest year on record in 2016, which was curiously paired with above-average rainfalls. “Normally, with that amount of rainfall, you’d expect it to be a reasonably cool year but it’s come out as one of the warmest on record,” climate scientist Karl Braganza said. “Part of that is the influence of global warming in the oceans and in the atmosphere.” Another major contributor to Australia’s climate in 2016 was a very strong El Nino, with significantly warmer sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean feeding moisture over the continent, the bureau said. It’s going to be an extremely hot end to 2016. On NYE a weak change will affect the weather across the Central Coast and southern areas of the NW with showers and storms to develop. The hot northerly winds will continue until New Years Day. The showers and storms will then contract to the NE spreading across the state.

WELL KNOWN HORSE TRAINER MISSING

A well-known Mid North Coast horse trainer has gone missing, after a Sydney race meeting at the weekend. Bindi Cheers was last seen at the Hawkesbury Race Club at about 2pm, before it’s believed she may have driven north to a service station at Beresfield. The 44-year-old is believed to be on foot and was last seen wearing grey cargo pants, running shoes and a maroon jacket. Mrs Cheers is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a slim build and fair complexion.

POLICE CAR SMASHED ON PACIFIC HIGHWAY

Police are urging drivers to slow down, after a police car was ploughed into, north of Forster. A highway patrol officer was responding to a single vehicle crash on the Pacific Highway at Wang Wauk, when just after 1.50 yesterday afternoon, the driver of a Toyota Hilux lost control and crashed into the parked police car. No-one was injured, the driver returned a negative result for a breath test and was issued a traffic infringement for negligent driving.
