ONE DEAD AFTER MID-NORTH COAST CRASH

A man has died while a teenage woman has been hospitalised following a crash on the state’s Mid-North Coast. Around 4pm yesterday a Mitsubishi and Subaru station wagon crashed head on along the Pacific Highway, about 2km south of The Lakes Way at Rainbow Flat. The 69-year-old male driver of the Subaru died at the scene, while the 18-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi was taken to Port Macquarie District Hospital in a stable condition. Crash scene investigators say the Mitsubishi may have been travelling the wrong way along the highway, heading north in the southbound lanes.

CRANE ACCIDENT

A worker has suffered a fractured leg after a crane toppled at a hospital building site in Taree on the New South Wales mid north coast. The man, aged in his 40s, fell four metres from the crane when it tipped at the Manning Base Hospital’s carpark construction site just before 8am on Thursday. The man was taken to the hospital with a broken leg.

DAUGHTER HAILED A HERO AFTER SAVING SERIOUSLY INJURED MOTHER

Police are hailing a 4-year-old girl a hero, after she helped save her seriously injured mother from an ATV crash west of Taree yesterday. About 1.30pm yesterday, the 35-year-old mother was riding a caged all terrain vehicle along a private driveway off Bakers Creek Road at Bundook. The woman accidentally drove down a steep slope, losing control and rolling several times before coming to a halt about 100 metres off the road. Authorities say the mother was pinned by the leg and suffered a fracture and several serious lacerations. The woman’s 4-year-old daughter saw the crash and ran to her mother, she fell and grazed her face on the way. She was able to climb down the embankment and tend to her mother before climbing back to the road. The child ran home and called 000. Several hours later the …

SPEEDING DRIVERS FRUSTRATE POLICE

Police say they’re dismayed at the number of drivers caught speeding over the Easter long weekend. 7,687 drivers in New South Wales were fined during Operation Tortoise, which began at 12.01am Thursday and concluded at 11:59pm last night. In the Northern Region, which stretches from the Central Coast to the NSW boarder, 1,572 speeding tickets were issued, 237 more than last year. There were 18 major crashes – two of those were fatal. Highway Patrol Assistant Commissioner, Michael Corboy says speeding drivers continue to put their lives and the lives of others at risk. “Speeding is still the biggest contributor to fatal crashes, contributing to about 40%. “The fact that over 7500 drivers were still detected speeding over a single long-weekend is ludicrous,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said. AUSTRALIAN SISTERS SPLASHED WITH ‘ACID’ IN LONDON CLUB

An Australian model and her sister have been caught up in an acid attack in a London nightclub. Isobella Fraser, 22, was visiting her sister Prue, 20, who works as a nanny in London at the time of the attack. The pair, who grew up in the Lake Macquarie suburb of Dudley, were among 12 people injured at the Mangle Club in East London, when a corrosive substance was thrown onto a crowd. SCOUT LEADER ARRESTED OVER CHILD ABUSE CLAIMS

Police have arrested a 75-year-old former Scout leader in Taree, after several men came forward with allegations of sexual abuse. The men came forward to police late last year, claiming they’d been abused during camping and outdoor activities while staying on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The accused was arrested yesterday and charged with 18 offences including indecent assault, buggery and child grooming. He was refused bail and will front Taree Local Court today.
