Newcastle ran out seven-nil winners against a Football Mid-North Coast side, in front of an impressive crowd of almost 4,000 at Port Macquarie. BEN SIMMONS TO FACE THE WIZARDS IN NBA DEBUT

It’s been a longer than expected wait for basketball fans, but today we finally learned when Hunters junior Ben Simmons will make his debut in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers. Having fully recovered from a foot injury that saw him miss last season, Simmons is on track to play against the Washington Wizards on October 19. Among his other notable fixtures is a match up with fellow Aussie Dant√© Exum and the Utah Jazz on November 8 and the clash with LeBron James’s Cleveland Cavaliers on December 10.

JETS LOOK TO KICK START PRE SEASON IN NORTHERN NSW

The Jets conducted a coaching clinic in Taree this afternoon – the first stop of their annual tour of Northern New South Wales. The squad will play games against the Mid North Coast and Northern Inland over the next three days. Following the 1-nil loss to Adelaide in the FFA Cup, Jason Hoffman admits his side needs to start hitting the target. “Whilst we are connecting with the community, it is about building on things we need to work on from the Adelaide game, the front third is one of those priority areas where we can build fitness and create more pressure.” The defender is a former teammate of Aaron Mooy, who made his EPL debut over the weekend. Hoffman says it’s inspired him to take his own game to another level.

WALLAROOS HAMMERED BY FRANCE AT THE WORLD CUP

The Australian women’s rugby side has suffered a huge loss at the World Cup, beaten 48-nil by France. Hunter trio Mollie Gray, Sarah Riordan and Katrina Barker all started for the Wallaroos, but it didn’t make a difference, with France crossing for the first of eight tries inside seven minutes. Things only got worse when Barker was sent to the sin bin with 15 minutes left to play. The Wallaroos will now face Japan in their final pool match on Friday morning, Australian time.

Australian lawn bowls champion Aron Sherriff is back on the local greens after winning the prestigious Golden Nugget tournament at Tweed Heads. Sherriff is now keen to earn the title of most capped Australian in his sport as he prepares to roll up for the Presitge Fours at Ettalong next week.
