22-YEAR-OLD DROWNS AT TWEED HEADS

A man in his 20’s has drowned on the Far North Coast. Emergency services responded to reports of people in trouble in the water at Duranbah Beach in Tweed Heads, just before 5pm yesterday. Eight people were pulled from the water by lifeguards, but a 22-year-old man died. The other seven people were taken to hospital for assessment.

MAN INJURED WHEN YACHT HIT POWER LINES

A 67-year-old man is lucky to be alive after his yacht hit high-voltage power lines in South Ballina. Emergency Services including police, ambulance, firefighters and lifesavers – were called to the boat’s location on the Richmond River around midday. The man was treated by paramedics at the scene, before being airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital. “A 67-year-old male, as a result of that incident, suffered serious burns to his hands and his arms and also burns to his leg and chest.” Roads and Maritime Services are investigating just how the craft came into contact with the active electricity lines. “Very lucky. High voltage power lines are a high risk – quite easily we could have been dealing with a very tragic incident.” (AUDIO IN PARTS)

Falls Festival has announced it will showcase more than 20 local acts alongside an international line-up over three days in Byron Bay. TEEN CHARGED FOLLOWING LISMORE SEXUAL ASSAULT

A teenage boy will face court today, accused of stabbing and sexually assaulting a woman at Lismore over the weekend. According to police, the 43-year-old woke to find the 16-year-old in her house in the early hours of Saturday morning. It’s alleged he then threatened the woman with a knife and sexually assaulted her. Police say the teenager fled after her screams alerted neighbours. She was treated by paramedics for a stab wound to her back, facial injuries and lacerations to her hands and arms. The 16-year-old was arrested at an address at Coraki last night, and later charged with several offences including wounding a person with the intent to murder and aggravated sexual assault.

LOCAL HEALTH DISTRICT TO ACT ON INQUIRY RECOMMENDATIONS

The Northern New South Wales Local Health District says it will finalise plans to roll out recommendations from the mental health inquiry, in March. The State Government yesterday handed down 19 recommendations following the independent review of seclusion, restrain and observation in mental health facilities. The inquiry was re-opened and expanded to include mental health treatment following leaked footage of patient Miriam Merten, who died at Lismore Base Hospital in 2014. (NO AUDIO)
