ROAMING BOVINES A CONCERN FOR RESIDENTS

Residents of a Hunter Valley suburb are calling on local council to address the herds of livestock that wander through the suburb from neighbouring rural properties. Thornton residents have reportedly lodged more than 50 complaints to council, with concerns the roaming bovines could one day cause serious injury or death. Driving hazards, manure, and damage to residential gardens are also among the concerns raised. TWO TO FACE COURT AFTER ALLEGED ATTEMPTED ROBBERY OF FISHERMEN

Two men fishing at Queens Wharf in Newcastle have been the target of an attempted robbery. The two fishermen were approached by two other men and a female juvenile just before 1am on Monday. Police say one man threatened the fishermen with a glass bottle after he was refused a cigarette, before the second man picked up a pair of scissors and demanded one of the men give him his necklace and watch. The two assailants, both aged 22, fled the scene after one of the fishermen managed to flee and contact police. Police arrested the two men a short time later, and they were charged with assault with intent to rob. The juvenile female was released pending further inquiries.

DRIVER CHARGED AFTER TEENAGER STRUCK AND KILLED BY 4WD

A man will face court next month, after a teenage girl was struck and killed by a car at Port Stephens yesterday. The 17-year-old was hit by a Toyota Prado on Warrigal Close in Brandy Hill, at around 7:30am. Paramedics treated her at the scene, but she sadly couldn’t be saved. The alleged driver of the car – a 42-year-old man – was last night charged with dangerous driving causing death and negligent driving causing death. His licence was also suspended. He’s set to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court next month.

36-YEAR-OLD WOMAN KILLED IN VEHICLE COLLISION NEAR DENMAN

A collision between a car and truck in the Upper Hunter Valley has claimed the life of woman early this morning. Police say a Hyundai hatchback collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction on Denman Road at Denman, near Muswellbrook, just before 4am. The 36-year-old female driver of the Hyundai died at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old man, was taken to Muswellbrook Hospital for mandatory testing.

KAYAKER DROWNS NEAR GLOUCESTER

The body of a 54-year-old woman has been pulled from the Barrington River at Rawdon Vale near Gloucester. Police have been told the woman was walking through the water with her kayak when she was swept under by rapids before becoming stuck under a log for a short time. Family members attempted to assist the woman, but she died at the scene.
