THREE CHARGED OVER MURDER ON CENTRAL COAST

Three men will spend Christmas behind bars, after being charged with the murder of a Central Coast man earlier this year. It’s believed the trio all have links to the Rebels bikie gang. Police allege they were involved in the bashing death of 42-year-old Clint Starkey in April this year. All three were formally refused bail in Gosford Court today. A fourth man, 36-year-old Adam Symons also appeared via video link, after being charged with murder in October. The four men will return to court in February.

MAN ATTACKED IN MEREWETHER

A man’s been stabbed in the neck and torso during an attack in the Newcastle suburb of Merewether. The 27-year-old was standing near his car in Ulick Street when he was approached by a man around 11.30 last night. He was stabbed several times in his neck, chest and arms during a struggle. The injured man, who’s in a stable condition, was driven to John Hunter Hospital, after phoning a friend. Police have been combing a crime scene on Friday morning, as their investigation continues.

YOUNG WOMAN HIT AND KILLED BY CAR AT WALLSEND

A 21-year-old woman has died after she was struck by a car while walking on the road in the Newcastle suburb of Wallsend. She was walking with two male friends on Minmi Road near the intersection of Fletcher Street around 11pm on Thursday, when she was hit by a Holden Astra travelling west. The young woman died in John Hunter Hospital. The 18-year-old male driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and alcohol testing.

WALLSEND BUILDING DESTROYED BY FIRE

Fire has torn through an abandoned building in Newcastle overnight. The blaze started some time between 8pm and 9pm in the former Wallsend Squash and Swim Centre on Council Street. Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution, including shoppers at Stockland Wallsend. The fire has caused extensive damage to the building. Police are still investigating the how the blaze began.

DOUBLE DEMERITS TO START TONIGHT

Drivers heading away for Christmas are being reminded that double demerit points come into force in New South Wales from midnight. The holiday roads operation runs right through until the 2nd of January. Double demerits will apply to all offences, including speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, and failing to wear a seatbelt.

TEEN CHARGED FOLLOWING LISMORE SEXUAL ASSAULT

A teenage boy will face court today, accused of stabbing and sexually assaulting a woman at Lismore over the weekend. According to police, the 43-year-old woke to find the 16-year-old in her house in the early hours of Saturday morning. It’s alleged he then threatened the woman with a knife and sexually assaulted her. Police say the teenager fled after her screams alerted neighbours. She was treated by paramedics for a stab wound to her back, facial injuries and lacerations to her hands and arms. The 16-year-old was arrested at an address at Coraki last night, and later charged with several offences including wounding a person with the intent to murder and aggravated sexual assault.

TWO PEOPLE THREATENED WITH TOMAHAWK IN ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

A man will undergo surgery on his jaw, after it was fractured in an attempted robbery at Port Macquarie. The 30-year-old and a 19-year-old woman were sitting in their car at Shelly Beach car park around 8:30 on Tuesday night, when a man approached them and demanded their wallets. When they refused, he threatened the pair with a tomahawk and struck the 30-year-old in the face. The victim suffered a cut and two fractures to his jaw and will undergo surgery at John Hunter Hospital. The offender is still on the run. Police are looking for a man described as being Caucasian, 35 to 45 years old, with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing shorts and a high-visibility work shirt.

THREE ARRESTED AFTER MOTEL ROOM SEARCH

A 32-year-old Warners Bay man will face Newcastle Local Court today, after police allegedly seized illegal drugs and more than $1000 cash from a motel room. Police say they’ve been searching for the man since earlier this year, when he was allegedly involved in several pursuits. Yesterday officers seized a stolen car from Hillsborough Road at Warners Bay, before forcing entry to a nearby motel room. There, a 32-year-old man was arrested and later charged with a string of offences including break, enter and steal and police pursuit. A 25-year-old woman was also issued a court attendance notice for possessing a prohibited drug, while a 35-year-old woman will appear before Belmont Local Court next month, charged with two offences.

BRISBANE MAN DROWNS ON FAR NORTH COAST

A young man has drowned at a beach at Suffolk Park on the New South Wales far north coast. Emergency services were called to the beach around 12:30, following reports a man was in trouble in the surf. The 21-year-old from Brisbane was found face down in the water. A witness performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but he couldn’t be revived.
