UON ALUMNI HONOURED

Scientists, doctors and even acting royalty, were some of people honoured at the University of Newcastle Alumni Awards night. In it’s 42nd year, the ceremony recognises past students for their outstanding work. Australian Actress Susie Porter was recognised for her innovation and creativity. Other notable winners from last night’s ceremony were stroke researcher Dr Andrew Bivard – and immunologist, Dr Malcolm Starkey.

BOY SUFFERS SPINAL INJURY PLAYING RUGBY

A 14-year-old boy has reportedly suffered suspected spinal injuries while playing rugby on the Central Coast this afternoon.   He’s been airlifted from a sports oval at Berkeley Vale with his mother, to Westmead Children’s Hospital, by the CareFlight rescue helicopter.   He’s reported to be in a stable condition.   Photo: CareFlight

POLICE SEARCH FOR WANTED MAN

Authorities are searching for a wanted man believed to be somewhere on the state’s mid north coast. 35-year-old Leonard Hoskins is wanted on outstanding parole warrants. Police say he frequents the Coffs Harbour, Clarence River, Wauchope, and Kempsey areas. He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, between 165cm and 170cm tall, with a medium build, with black hair, black facial hair – possibly a goatee, and hazel eyes.

WALLSEND MP CHARGED BY NSW ELECTORAL COMMISSION

The NSW Electoral Commission has charged Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery for allegedly misusing enrolment information. The Commission alleges the offence occurred in August last year. One charge has been laid, with the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office prosecuting the matter on behalf of the Commission. As the matter will be heard in the Local Court, the maximum fine that can be imposed is $22,000. The matter is listed before the Downing Centre Local Court on August 28. Ms Hornery has released a statement saying she will be “vigorously defending” the matter. “I take my duties as an MP very seriously and always act with integrity,” she said. “As the matter is about to go to court, I don’t think it is appropriate to make any further comment until the process is complete.”

MAN CHARGED FOLLOWING ROAD-RAGE INCIDENT

A Lake Macquarie man has handed himself in to police, following a road-rage incident on the Central Coast. Two drivers stopped at the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Elizabeth Bay Drive at Lake Munmorah, just after midday on Monday. Police say a 41-year-old man and 21-year-old woman got into an argument, before the man punched her. The Windermere Park man turned up to Wyong Police Station yesterday morning, where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He’s been granted conditional bail, to face Wyong Local Court on August 30.

POLICE RAID HOMES LINKED TO OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE GANGS

Police have seized cash, a rifle scope and a small amount of drugs, following a raid on the home of an associate of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang in northern NSW. Strike Force Walenore was formed to target bikie gangs, following recent acts of violence which are believed to be related to tensions between rival clubs. This week police searched for firearms, firearm parts and ammunition at two properties. They seized a rifle scope, a laser pointer, more than $6000 cash and cannabis from one at Commissioners Creek on Monday. A search was also conducted at the home of a member of the Lone Wolf Outlaw Motorcycle Gang at Terranora yesterday, where a 39-year-old man was issued a warning for consorting.
