NEW ENERGY SAVING LED STREET LIGHTS IN PORT MACQUARIE

More than 5,000 street lights in Port Macquarie are being replaced with new energy efficient L-E-D technology, in a bid to reduce electricity costs. The move is expected to reduce council’s electricity consumption by around 10 per cent. “We’d be looking at achieving a cost saving in order of $310-350,000 a year depending on how the energy costs go, and that will be a combination of reduced maintenance cost and reduced energy costs” – Council’s Acting Infrastructure Director, Andrew Doig. Essential Energy have already replaced over 1000 lights, with the $2-million project to be complete by January. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

MAN’S BODY FOUND ON CENTRAL COAST

Police have found a body on the Central Coast, believed to be that of a missing kayaker. Officers had been searching for the 44-year-old around the Chittaway Bay area. He was last seen kayaking about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Sadly, a man’s body was found in Tuggerah Lake near Berkeley Vale at around 9:30 this morning, with a red kayak also located. Police will now formally identify the man and prepare a brief for the Coroner.

UPDATE: COCAINE-FILLED CATAMARAN INTERCEPTED ON LAKE MACQUARIE

Authorities have seized 700-kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $245-million, from a catamaran on Lake Macquarie. The operation took part at Toronto at around 3pm yesterday afternoon, as part of a multi-agency investigation into international drug trafficking by sea. Police say a search of the vessel uncovered a large commercial quantity of cocaine concealed in the hull. A 68-year-old man was arrested on board the boat, while a 47-year-old was arrested at a hotel in Warners Bay and a 63-year-old was arrested at a home in Islington. The men have been charged with import a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs. They’ve been refused bail in Newcastle Local Court and are due to reappear on January 30.
