GAV’S WEATHER: NICE TO HAVE RAIN ON THE GROUND

The local region was largely cloud affected with showers mostly confined to the coast while the swell will begin to ease along with the strong SE winds. The wet weather will continue to contract north into QLD with only a few isolated showers to fall on the northern NSW and SE QLD coasts. Cyclone Gita is now beginning to make its way towards NZ as ex Cyclone Kelvin moves towards the Nullabor. Things will dry back out inland.

JETS REWARDED WITH MATILDAS SELECTION

W-League Jets Emily van Egmond and Hannah Brewer, have been rewarded for their great season with Newcastle by being selected in the 22-player Matildas squad for the upcoming Algarve Cup in Portugal. The Aussie side has been grouped with Norway, China and the host nation, and will kick off the tournament with a game against the Norwegians on March 1. Post-cup, the Matildas will return home to continue preparations for the 2018 Asian Cup in Jordan.

MAN CRITICAL AFTER NEWCASTLE STABBING

A 47-year-old man has been taken to John Hunter Hospital after being stabbed in the neck and arm in the Newcastle suburb of Bar Beach. Police were called to a Light Street address around 8:30 on Monday night after reports a man had been stabbed. He remains in a critical condition in hospital while police continue to investigate the circumstances.

TWO ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY ATTEMPTING TO RUN POLICE OFF NORTH COAST ROAD

Two men, both aged 24, have been arrested for drug offences after an alleged attempt to run a police vehicle off the road on the North Coast. The Mitsubishi Triton travelling along Stony Chute Road, west of Nimbin, around 1pm on Sunday when police attempted to stop the vehicle. It is alleged the car continued towards the officers, attempting to run their car off the road. Their vehicle was eventually stopped with both the driver and passenger arrested and taken to Lismore Police Station. Both were charged with multiple drug offences, while the driver was also charged with using a weapon to avoid apprehension.

SEARCH RESUMES FOR MISSING SWIMMER NEAR COFFS HARBOUR

Emergency services have resumed the search for a missing swimmer at Valla Beach near Coffs Harbour. The 22 year old Queensland man, who was last scene on Friday afternoon, disappeared after becoming caught in a rip at the popular holiday spot. The search was suspended overnight due to poor light and large seas but resumed at first light this morning with Water Police, Surf Life Saving and the Volunteer Rescue Association assisting police officers.
