ARSON ATTACK ON DISUSED BOWLO

Police are investigating a suspicious fire that gutted an old bowls club at Weston. The outbreak began at around 1.30 this morning, and had engulfed the building by the time firefighters arrived. The blaze caused at least $100,000 damage to the uninsured building.

DEADLY DAYS IN COFFS HARBOUR

The latest in a series of ‘ Deadly Days’ aimed at encouraging young indigenous people to further their education was held in Coffs Harbour today. Around 600 young people from across the region joined in to celebrate aboriginal culture, and examine career opportunities.

TWO INJURED IN OFFSHORE SHIP EXPLOSION

One of two Filipino seamen severely burnt in an explosion onboard a bulk carrier off Nelson Bay this morning has been transferred to hospital in Sydney. The rescue helicopter was sent to the Cape Lotus, 120 kilometres east of Nelson Bay about 5am. A 31-year-old man was transferred to the Royal North Shore Burns Unit in a serious condition, while a 51-year-old man remains at the John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE

A fire, possibly started by children playing with matches, has destroyed a house at Birmingham Gardens. The Fussell Street house went up in smoke at about 2pm Tuesday, and investigators are still trying to determine the cause. Police say the owner of the house is overseas, but a relative was helping to clean up the house when the fire started.

APPRENTICE DIES AFTER ELECTRIC SHOCK

A 24-year-old plumbing apprentice has died after receiving an electric shock while working on a Rutherford house. Ambulances were called to a Buffier Street house about two o’clock on Tuesday, after reports two tradesmen had been injured. The 24-year-old victim was taken by ambulance to Maitland Hospital, after going into cardiac arrest, and later died. A 31-year-old man was airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital with burns. He’s in a stable condition. Police spent the afternoon examining the scene. Two workcover investigators were sent to inspect the house, preliminary investigations suggest the men were cutting pipes at the time of the accident.

Upset at the outcry and criticism directed at his friend Sonny Bill Williams after the Bulldog star walked out on a 5-year contract with the NRL club, Mundine hit out on the eve of his fight against Japan’s Crazy Kim. Keeping in close contact with Williams, Mundine described how his mate is coping with the fallout in London with NBN’s Jim Callinan.

INJURED POLICEMAN FIRES SHOTS

A police officer fired two shots, after being struck by a car during an arrest in Coffs Harbour this morning. The incident occurred in Vincent Street at Park Beach, at about 9.45. A man who was arrested over a number of traffic matters, is expected to be charged later tonight.
