RUGBY PLAYER CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING REFEREE

A Hunter rugby player has been charged with assaulting a referee, during an under-19 grand final. Maitland’s Mark Meafua is accused of striking 19-year-old match official Niklas Gaal in the face, when he was about to receive a yellow card. Police allege 18-year-old Meafua then left the field – he was later arrested at his Rutherford home. He’s been charged with common assault and is due to face Maitland Court next month.

INDEPENDENTS PUSH FOR CARRINGTON BOAT RAMP UPGRADE

Newcastle’s Lord Mayoral candidates are tonight being questioned by business leaders, at a joint Chamber of Commerce forum. Earlier, the campaigning for council seats continued, with independent John Church calling for the Carrington boat ramp to be upgraded. “It could be made much safer and a greater amenity for boat users by simply adding a floating pontoon. We’d like council to look at funding that and undertaking a cost benefit analysis.” (Audio in parts)
