Supercar supporters are heading home tonight, after witnessing Scott McLaughlin dramatically hand the championship to Jamie Whincup at the Newcastle 500. BODY OF MISSING SNORKELLER FOUND AT PORT STEPHENS

There’s been a sad end to the search for a snorkeller at a popular Port Stephens diving spot, with the discovery of his body late yesterday. 29-year-old Scott McGuire hadn’t been seen since going into the water at Birubi Beach on Sunday. His disappearance sparked a large-scale search by emergency services, but it was a fellow snorkeller who discovered his body at around 4:20 yesterday afternoon. Mr McGuire had apparently been diving for lobsters.   Note: no audio

CHANEL MATA’UTIA QUITS KNIGHTS

Chanel Mata’utia has quit the Newcastle Knights, effectively ending his career from top tier football. The club granted him a release from the final year of his contract this morning. Mata’utia is set to play in the Newcastle Rugby League premiership next season. The 25-year-old played 13 NRL games in four seasons for his home club. “The Club has been great to me and I will miss everyone, but it is the right time for me to step away from the game at this level,” Mata’utia said. “I plan to play in the local competition and find a job, as my family and I move on to the next stage of our lives. “I am comfortable with my decision and want to thank everyone at the Club, and also the fans, for all of the support.”
