REDHEAD BEACH CLOSED AFTER SHARK SIGHTING

A beach near Newcastle has been closed this morning, following a confirmed sighting of a great white shark. Redhead Beach was closed by Lake Macquarie lifeguards after a surveillance drone found the three-metre shark swimming near surfers. The beach may reopen later, if an aerial search confirms the creature has moved on.

WEATHER: TOMORROW AND CHRISTMAS FORECAST

PHOTO: Di Lymbury captured this beauty at the aptly named Angel’s Beach.  Afternoon shower and storm development over the NW and Northern Ranges is expected tomorrow. It will be a hot day thanks to NW to NE winds. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be predominantly fine apart from more afternoon storm and shower development on the Northern NSW Ranges, with the chance some of these storms will roll off the eastern slopes to the coastal towns in the late afternoon evening period.

TODDLER DROWNS AT PORT STEPHENS

A 14-month old girl has tragically drowned at Port Stephens at the weekend. The girl was found by a relative in the backyard pool of a home in Medowie at about 4.15, yesterday afternoon. The toddler was taken to John Hunter Hospital, but couldn’t be revived. Police are investigating and a brief will be prepared for the Coroner.

McKINNON TO SUE NRL

Alex McKinnon, the young rugby league player who was left paralysed following a tackle from a Melbourne Storm front-rower in 2014, has reportedly launched a lawsuit against the NRL. The Daily Telegraph reports the NRL received a letter from the former Newcastle Knights player instigating legal proceedings. The newspaper also reports Jordan McLean, the Storm player responsible for the tackle, is being “personally pursued”. McKinnon must use a wheelchair for life as a result of his injuries, and was paid $750,000 by the Knights to honour the two years of his contract after he was injured. He is currently working in player recruitment for the team. It is understood he will need up to $20 million to support his injuries for the rest of his life. STATE CRIME COMMAND INVESTIGATES ELABORATE ATTEMPTED THEFT

The State Crime Command is investigating an elaborate attempt to steal an ATM at a Lake Macquarie shopping centre. The free-standing Newcastle Permanent machine, at Mount Hutton’s Lake Macquarie Fair, was targeted by thieves at about 4.30 this morning. They allegedly kicked in a glass door and attempted to set the ATM on fire, before fleeing. The machine was taped up today… investigators say they’re following lines of inquiry.

THREE HOSPITALISED AFTER SANDGATE BRAWL

Three people were taken to John Hunter Hospital following a brawl at a birthday party in Sandgate last night. Police say up to 15 people were involved in the altercation, outside a hotel on Sandgate Road, after some patrons were escorted from the premises. One person suffered a suspected broken jaw. An 18-year-old man has been charged – police are attempting to identify all those involved.

SANTA SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER TO SICK CHILDREN

Santa is a very busy man this time of year, but today he managed to find time to visit some sick kids at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. Santa, Mrs Claus and their little helpers spread Christmas cheer, along with some less traditional festive characters like Captain Jack Sparrow, Wonder Woman and others from a galaxy far far away. The Newcastle Jets were also in the wards spreading smiles – they presented a cheque to further fund the festive visits. (AUDIO IN PARTS)
