SUSPECTED GUNMAN IN NEWCASTLE CHARGED BY POLICE

A suspected gunman who forced residents in suburban Newcastle into lock down on Saturday has been charged by police. On Saturday afternoon, three men got into an argument on Joslin Street Kotara. A car chase followed, and it’s alleged a 33-year-old man threatened the driver of a Nissan Navara and his two passengers with a pistol. A 33-year-old man was charged with predatory driving, where a knife and pistol were used. He was refused bail and remains in custody to reappear in court on September 24.

A beautiful taste of Spring has spread across the region once again but it will all come crashing done like it has over the past three consecutive weeks. Another polar blast is closing in. Tomorrow the cloud will increase and scattered showers will fall with the chance of some thunder activity as the pre-frontal trough passes over. Overnight into Thursday the cold air will march back in and there is the chance that we will see snow across the higher peaks of the Barringtons and northern ranges including New England by Thursday morning.

NEWCASTLE TEENAGER NAMED SES YOUNG VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Newcastle State Emergency Service volunteer, Shaun Farmer was named the New South Wales SES Young Volunteer of the Year today. During a ceremony at NSW Parliament House, Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliot commended 17-year-old Shaun for his achievement. “It is clear Shaun is a young leader who recognises the value of community participation, hard work and camaraderie and I thank him for his commitment to the NSW SES,” Mr Elliott said. He participated in a NSW SES cadet program at Lambton High School in 2013. Shaun has been a member of the Newcastle unit for two years.

FATHER ASKS POLITICIANS TO FUND HIS FAMILY HOLIDAY AFTER EXPENSES SCANDAL

A father-of-three from the Central Coast is challenging politicians online after the recent scandal exposing Federal MPs using taxpayers dollars to fund their own family’s travels. Stephen Callaghan, has launched an online campaign requesting politicians to donate $5000 for his family holiday to Uluru. TENDER FOR LIGHT RAIL TECHNICAL ADVISOR WANTED

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance announced today the tender for a technical advisor for the Newcastle Light Rail. The announcement comes a fortnight after new designs for the Wickham transport interchange were released. “Make no mistake, we are getting on with the job of delivering these key revitalisation projects for the people of Newcastle,” Mr Constance said. Tenderers must be able to demonstrate specialist experience in engineering, urban design and light rail systems. Further consultation and the release of planning documents for the light rail are expected in late 2016.

CHILD APPROACHED IN COFFS HARBOUR LAST WEEK

Police are appealing for witnesses, after a child was approached in Coffs Harbour last week. About 8:45am on Thursday, a 10-year-old boy was walking on Beryl Street before the driver of a Toyota Camry approached him. The female driver got out of the Camry and approached the boy who became afraid and walked away from her. On arriving at school he informed his teacher who contacted police. The woman was described as being of African appearance, aged between 20-30, 160cm tall, with dark shoulder length hair. She was wearing a green long sleeve shirt with a white shirt over the top.

WOMAN CHARGED FOR ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE DRUGS INTO TAMWORTH JAIL

A 19-year-old woman has been charged after she allegedly tried to smuggle drugs into Tamworth Correctional Centre yesterday. Police allege the woman was visiting her boyfriend, when a small amount of cannabis and methadone was found during a routine search. She’s been charged with four offences, including one count of supplying a prohibited drug. The Tamworth woman will front court on September 7.

ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR MID NORTH COAST DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM

The State government has announced an additional $400,000 to extend a drug treatment program established by Hunter Area Health. It’s part of an $11 million program to help people fighting addiction and crystal methamphetamine use. The service will be extended to Tamworth and the Mid North Coast. The expansion follows a 7-fold increase in the number of people presenting for drug treatment over the last six years.

POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH OF MAN AT SANDGATE

Police are investigating the death of a man at Newcastle today. Emergency services were called to an industrial site on Old Maitland Road at Sandgate this afternoon, where they found a man unconscious. The 45-year-old died at the scene. Police were told two men allegedly became involved in an argument, following a minor collision between a truck and a forklift. A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with inquiries.
