CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TO PERFORM IN NEWCASTLE

Roll up, roll up, the circus is coming to town… Cirque du Soleil’s “Quidam” is making its way to Newcastle early next year for 11 performances. Quidam will feature acrobatics, musicians, singers and actors. The group will perform from 15th to 24th January 2016. A priority pre-sale for Quidam is now available online to Cirque members through to June 18. Tickets for the general public will be available June 19. A CELEBRATION OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN NEWCASTLE

The Newcastle Unity in Diversity Festival is on today in celebration of diverse cultures across the Hunter. The activities will begin with a walk from Newcastle Museum to Civic Park from 11am. Upon arrival to Civic Park, an Awabakal Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country will open the family festival. Following that, Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes will deliver a cultural diversity speech. An array of activties will be open to the public, including an African Drumming workshop, Belly Dancers, live music, stalls, food, children’s activities, face-painting and more. The event is produced by the Refugee Action Network Newcastle, to coincide with National Refugee week.

SAD END FOR MISSING ARMIDALE MAN

A body has been found during a search for missing Armidale man Keith Parry at Chaffey Dam this afternoon, south-east of Tamworth. Around 7am, police found his Subaru Liberty sedan on the southern side of the dam, before locating the body of a 77 year old in nearby bushland this afternoon. The death isn’t being treated as suspicious.

LAKE MACQUARIE COUPLE CELEBRATE 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

A Lake Macquarie couple celebrated a magnificent milestone today – their 70th wedding anniversary. Noel and Audrey Hodges were 23 and 22 when they married, Noel just home from the Second World War. The couple lived in Kempsey, Armidale and Sydney then retired to South West Rocks. They have three children including twins. Now living at Booragul, Noel and Audrey say the secret to their happy marriage has been compromise, and having separate as well as shared interests.

AGL ENERGY OPENS GAS STORAGE FACILITY AT TOMAGO

AGL Energy has opened its $310-million Newcastle Gas Storage Facility at Tomago. The site which has been under construction since August 2012, will improve supply for hundreds of gas users in New South Wales. AGL Managing Director and CEO, Andy Vesey said the project was delivered on time and on budget. “It’s a vital asset for the Hunter region and will be used to support gas supplies during times of peak winter demand and if there is a major disruption to NSW gas supplies”, he said. The 40 metre high tank has the capacity to hold 30,000 tonnes – or 1.5 petajoules – of liquefied natural gas.

TOURISM HUNTER STANDS DOWN UNTIL MORE STATE FUNDS SECURED

Fed up with fighting for State government funding Tourism Hunter is standing down until it can secure a more sustainable funding structure. The organistion claims NSW Regional Tourism Offices have faced numerous challenges over the years to ensure funding. Will Creedon, chair of Hunter Tourism, hopes the move will prompt a positive response from the government, saying. “For too long, regions across NSW have been hampered by inconsistent capability funding, today we ask the NSW government to usher in a new era to take Regional Tourism forward by creating a sustainable regional tourism model”

CONCERN FOR MISSING TEEN IN ALSTONVILLE

Police hold concerns for a teenage girl who went missing from her home at Alstonville on the NSW north coast yesterday. 15-year-old Clancy Ellis was last seen walking along Maple Drive about 10:30am after leaving school. Police have been told she may be travelling north or south along the east coast. Clancy Ellis is described as Caucasian, about 165 to 170cm tall, with a thin build, blue eyes, long dyed red hair and a piercing to her right nostril. She was last seen wearing a school uniform described as a maroon zip-up hooded jumper, grey chequered shirt, and wearing black leather shoes with red ribbon laces.
