POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH

Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Muswellbrook last week. A 34-year-old Kingswood man was riding a motorcycle on Wollombi Road last Thursday evening, when it appears he collided with a curb, before losing control. The rider came off his bike and hit a letterbox. After being taken to hospital, his condition deteriorated through the week, and he died on Tuesday.

WEATHER WITH GAV: CALM BEFORE THE NEXT STORM

All fine today and tomorrow, although it is still quite cold, especially overnight and during the early morning period. The afternoon sunshine is helping along with the North West air flow. The next round of cold polar winds to move through will begin to take hold on Thursday with more winter storms likely as the cold air mass again collides with the milder air which is now building thanks to all the sunshine. During Thursday the mercury will again begin to fall as the icy air mass marches north to the QLD border once again producing snow down to about 900m along the northern ranges. The low is expected to create another burst of heavy down pours across the Central Coast and Hunter on Friday with conditions easing across the weekend.

EMPIRE SITE TO BE RE-RELEASED TO MARKET

  The Hunter Development Corporation has resumed control of the old Empire Hotel site on Newcastle’s Hunter Street after plans for an apartment building including a low-cost accommodation component, fell through. HDC General Manager, Bob Hawes said the site will go back on the market. “Despite genuine efforts over a lengthy period, HDC and the proponent, Newcastle First, could not agree to final contract terms for the proposed development,” Mr Hawes said. PUPPY INQUIRY BEGINS IN ARMIDALE

The first public hearing on commercial pet breeding in NSW began in Armidale today. Parliamentary Secretary, Scot MacDonald is in Armidale as the inquiry looks in to Companion Animal Breeding Practices in new South Wales. Northern Tablelands MP, Adam Marshall is also part of the Joint Select Committee. “We need to make sure that improved regulation of the breeding industry delivers better outcomes for both the public who are its customers, and for breeders and retailers,” Mr Marshall said. SEARCH FOR SENTIMENTAL FORD

A call has gone out on social media to track down a distinctive Ford that was stolen on Friday night. The priceless Ford XY Fairmont was stolen from Wentworth Street, Telarah. The car held a special bond between father, Tad Ziernik, and son, Mark Zeirnik. Mark died in a motorcycle accident in 2002. His heart broken father, Tad maintained the car as a lasting tribute to his son. Tad passed away earlier this year from bowel cancer and the car remained parked in the family carport. Family and friends are asking for the car to be returned or if sighted to have its whereabouts reported to police.

GAV’S WEATHER: POLAR BLAST NUMBER TWO

It’s been a fun 48 hours of snow extending north along the NSW ranges to the QLD border. Conditions will settle down before the next system comes through at the end of the week. The next blast moves in on Thursday night and again we should see more snow fall across the Northern NSW ranges. So expect more cold nights. Tomorrow will be mostly fine with cloud increasing on Wednesday.
