POLICE INVESTIGATE SEXUAL ASSAULT IN TAMWORTH

Police are investigating after a woman was sexually assaulted in the backyard of a Calala home, in Tamworth over the weekend. About 10:30pm on Saturday, a 22-year-old woman was at home in Harrier Parade, when she went into her backyard. As she was returning to her house, she was approached by an unknown man who sexually assaulted her, before running away. The woman sought treatment at Tamworth Hospital. Police also received a report that earlier in the night an unknown man was seen in the backyard of a nearby home in Boronia Drive. He was only described as wearing a hooded jumper. Police would like to speak to anyone who has any other information.

POLICE RE-APPEAL FOR INFORMATION ON MISSING MID NORTH COAST MAN

Police are re-appealing for assistance from the public to locate missing Mid North Coast man, John Shaw. Mr Shaw, 45, was last seen on Christmas Day last year, after he had been to lunch with his family in Taree. He left the home about 3.30pm and has not been heard from since.. Mr Shaw is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 173cm tall, with a medium/fit build, and black hair. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black shorts and white sneakers. Police and family have extreme concerns for Mr Shaw’s welfare, as he suffers a medical condition and does not have his medication.

SHARK BARRIERS TOO LATE FOR SUMMER

The installation of new shark barriers on the North Coast have been further delayed until at least Autumn. The 800-metre net for Ballina’s Lighthouse Beach won’t be in the water until the end of February, local mayor David Wright said on Monday. Whilst the barrier for Lennox Head beach has an even longer delay. Beaches will continue to be patrolled as normal by surf lifesavers and helicopter monitoring will also be extended until Easter with continued shark activity, Mr Wright said. The barriers are part of the NSW Government’s $16 million shark strategy to protect swimmers and surfers from shark attacks. WOMAN HELD UP AT KNIFE-POINT ON THE GOLD COAST

A woman has been held up at knife-point by a pair of car-jackers near a Gold Coast train station. Police say two men threatened the woman about 7:30am Monday morning, near the Varsity Lakes train station before driving away in her car. The alleged attackers were arrested after abandoning the car at Coolangatta but have yet to be charged.

NEWCASTLE JETS DEFEATED BY PERTH GLORY

Newcastle Jets have suffered a defeat by Perth Glory on Sunday, falling 6-1. The crowd watched at the Jets dominated the early stages of the game, with a headed goal from striker Milos Trifunović. Newcastle’s dissappointment was compounded when captain Nigel Boogaard was dismissed by referee Shaun Evans in the 45th minute. After halftime, Perth managed to find the back of the net four times against Newcastle, taking lead. The Jets will travel to Adelaide for the Hyundai A-League round 17 next Sunday.

MAN CHARGED AFTER SHOT FIRED IN CESSNOCK

A man has been charged after allegedly firing a shot at a home in Cessnock on Sunday. About 3:45am, a man attended a home on Cumberland Street, and became involved in a verbal altercation with a woman. Following the altercation, it’s alleged the man fired a shot into a home on Cumberland Street. No one was injured during the accident. Local police were notified and a search of the area for the man was conducted, however he was not found. About 6pm on Sunday, Police executed a search warrant at a home on Desmond Street in Cessnock, where they allegedly seized an amount of ammunition. About 7pm, Police attended a home on Callaghan Street in Kurri Kurri, shortly after officers arrested a 28-year-old at the home. TOY WAREHOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE

A toy warehouse in the New South Wales Lake Macquarie region has been destroyed by an overnight fire. Emergency services were called to Bennetts Green just after midnight and found the building well alight. A Fire and Rescue spokesman said up to 10 fire trucks were used to battle the blaze. Chief superintendent Dave Felton said firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading to a neighbouring carpentry business, but the toy warehouse roof had fallen in. “It is sad. It’s always unfortunate when we lose a building or a piece of infrastructure in any community,” he said. “Obviously it impacts on people’s livelihoods.” The cause of the blaze is under investigation. A spokesperson from the Transport Management Centre said the Pacific Highway is open in both directions and there are no delays to traffic in the area.
