CONFLICTING REASONS FOR OVERWORKED NURSES

Hunter New England Health has apologised to nurses for the workload at Belmont Hospital, saying it’s fixing the rostering issue responsible. The Nurses and Midwives Association says the problem has been ongoing for several months, and stems from the hospital being understaffed. Hunter New England Health says it’s scheduling weekly roster meetings… the association wants more full-time nurses put on.

A GOOD CAUSE FOR NINJA WARRIORS

Ordinary people became Ninja Warriors today at the Genesis Fitness club in Cooks Hill. Athletes were put through their paces, crawling, climbing and swinging through Ninja Park all for a good cause. They’re raising money for the Our Backyard, Car to Home project. The $400 entry fee from each is donated to the local charity that offers homeless people a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

GROUP MAKE THEIR PROTEST OBVIOUS

Protesters against the Life Without Barriers group made their feelings obvious today, rallying outside the organisations Newcastle building. The Alliance for Family Preservation highlighted what it believes are downfalls in the foster care system for vulnerable children, saying some are abused and neglected. The alliance hit out at the state government as well, claiming funding Life Without Barriers helps facilitate the harmful cycle.

SECOND ARREST OVER COFFS ROBBERIES

A second man has been arrested and charged following several alleged armed robberies in the Coffs / Clarence area. Last Sunday, detectives arrested an 18 year-old Coffs Harbour man over the alleged attempted armed robbery at the Sawtell Bowling Club in late July. He was charged for that incident and two other armed robberies that occurred at a Coffs Harbour video store and supermarket earlier the same month. The teenager was refused bail and appeared before court yesterday. Meanwhile a 29-year-old man remains before the court in relation to these incidents as well. Investigations are continuing and more arrests are expected.

BARRICADE SITUATION IN GLOUCESTER

A man is being treated for burns in hospital after a barricade situation in Gloucester overnight. Just after 9 last night, police attended a home on Denison Street and attempted to speak to a 63 year-old man. He allegedly made number of threats to the authorities outside and just before midnight the house caught alight. When the blaze was put out, emergency services found the man inside suffering from burns. He was taken to Gloucester Hospital and has now been be airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital. A critical incident investigation team will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

RIDER FOUND WITH KNIFE AND DRUGS

A motorbike rider has been found with a knife and an amount of the drug ‘ice’ on him after he was pulled over in Broadmeadow for riding without a helmet. About 4pm yesterday, police allegedly spotted the 23-year-old man riding along Chatham Road without a helmet on. Besides the knife and ‘ice’, police also found unlawfully obtained cash, debit cards and a passport on the man. He’ll be facing Newcastle court in a fortnight on a number of charges including supply prohibited drug, possess prohibited drug, custody of knife and deal with proceeds of crime.
