SES RECEIVES ALMOST 300 CALL-OUTS OVERNIGHT

New South Wales and Queensland emergency services have already responded to almost 300 call-outs overnight, as severe storms bear down on the state’s entire coast, stretching up to south-east Queensland. The emergency services body praised the proactive behaviour of residents who requested assistance with setting up sandbags and their homes in preparation for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding. An east coast low is developing off southern Queensland and northern NSW, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a warning this morning that the weather may worsen tomorrow. The area around the QLD-NSW border is expected to be the worst hit. TRUCK ROLLS AND CATCHES FIRE AT FREEMANS WATERHOLE

There are substantial traffic delays southbound on the M1 near Newcastle after a truck rolled and caught alight about 2am. Emergency crews arrived at the Pacific Highway in Freemans Waterhole about 2.20am after a semi-trailer carrying Oregon pine slabs failed to negotiate a left hand bend and overturned. The truck burst into flames and the 59-year-old driver escaped with only minor chest injuries. Paramedics took the man to John Hunter Hospital. A NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman said motorists could expect lengthy delays while the scene was cleared. “Crews worked really hard to extinguish the fire, the truck was carrying timber,” spokesman Jason Millar told reporters. “Crews continued throughout the morning to extinguish the load and contain the diesel spill.” Mr Millar said the scene would take a while to clear while crews ensured the area was safe. “Delays will …

LAWYERS INVESTIGATE DREAMWORLD RESPONSE TIME AFTER MAN’S FALL FROM LOG RIDE ON GOLD COAST.

Lawyers for the man who nearly drowned after falling from the log ride at Gold Coast theme park Dreamworld are urgently calling for witnesses to come forward. Samson Sherrin, 19, was left with hip and foot fractures, neck and head injuries after he fell from the ride on April 17 and lawyers claim he was left in the water while logs passed over the top of him. Sugath Wijedoru of Littles Lawyers told the Gold Coast Bulletin they were investigating “an issue in relation to the timeliness of Dreamworld staff coming to his assistance.” Mr Sherrin was also left with lacerations to his entire body and had his clothing ripped off, coupled with severe psychiatric injuries. SUSPICIOUS FIRE DESTROYS MOTORBIKES AT GOLD COAST SHOP

Motorbikes at a Gold Coast business have been destroyed in a suspicious fire overnight. A passing police patrol noticed smoke pouring from Bike Sales Qld, on Lawrence Drive in Nerang, about 11.15pm. Ten fire trucks were called into fight the fire at the used motorcycle shop, with a large amount of petrol fuelling the blaze. “This is a very large fire, and it’s taken quite a deal of resources from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), we have approximately 10 fire appliances, specialist appliances from Brisbane, also aerial appliances from Surfers Paradise and surrounding areas,”  QFES Inspector Chris Robinson said. A large number of motorbikes were destroyed and the shop has been extensively damaged. Once the building is deemed safe to enter, investigators will work to establish the cause of the blaze. MAN’S EAR SEVERED IN GOLD COAST CRANE CRASH

Police say a tyre blowout is to blame for a crane that rolled and tipped near the Gold Coast. Two men were injured when the mobile crane lost control and crashed through a fence at Pimpama yesterday morning. The 57-year-old driver’s ear was severed during the ordeal after he became trapped in the cabin. His 44-year-old passenger – who was thrown from the vehicle – suffered pelvis, shoulder and neck injuries. The pair were taken to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition. A police spokeswoman told 9NEWS it was hoped the driver’s ear could be reattached. © AAP 2016

Shooting Australia have said they are ‘working closely’ with Australian Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond in relation to charges relating to an alleged drink driving charge over the weekend. The organisation said they are attempting to ascertain more information in regards to the allegations but are “working closely with Michael to support him and to ensure that his welfare is protected.” “We are also communicating regularly with the Australian Olympic Committee and our other stakeholders, and we will continue to do so,” Shooting Australia said in a statement earlier today.  The communication comes after the 44-year-old trap shooting champion was allegedly charged with high-range drink driving and illegally carrying a gun in his car near a house in Nelson Bay on Saturday night. NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYER BREAKS NECK DURING MATCH

An amateur Newcastle rugby league player is facing the possibility of life in a wheelchair after breaking his neck in several places after a horror tackle. Windale Eagles back-rower Damian Jobson, 35, was playing against the University of Newcastle on Saturday when he hit the knee of an opposition player as he went in for a tackle. Mr Jobson’s wife Brooke said her husband had surgery on Saturday night but the prognosis was “as bad as it can get”. “We’re praying everything is going to be OK, but we’re just not so sure at this stage,” she told the Newcastle Herald. Mr Jobson cannot feel from the shoulders down, she said. He underwent specialist testing at the Royal North Shore hospital last night.
