WARABROOK MAN TO FACE TRIAL OVER DEATH OF CO-WORKER

A man will face trial over the death of a co-worker at Sandgate last year. 44-year-old Geoffrey Michael Strong from Warabrook was today committed to stand trial over the death of Glen Canning. It’s alleged Mr Strong punched Mr Canning in the face several times during a fight following a collision between a prime mover and a forklift. Strong is facing one charge of assault causing death. The trial is set to begin in Newcastle District Court in August. (VISION ONLY)

WILLIAMTOWN GREENHOUSE PLACED INTO VOLUNTARY ADMINISTRATION

The company behind a proposal to build Australia’s largest greenhouse at Port Stephens has been placed into voluntary administration. It’s cast serious doubt over the future of the project, which suffered extensive damage during storms in January. The greenhouse, at Maria’s Farm Veggies at Williamtown, was to cover 16-hectares and produce 15,000 tonnes of vegetables each year. The company is insured, and its main shareholder is confident the project will proceed.

CONSERVATION AWARENESS HIGHLIGHTED IN PORT STEPHENS

A very different whale appeared at Port Stephens today, with more than a thousand people coming together to form the outline of a humpback. The “human whale” was formed on Shoal Bay Beach, to raise awareness of conservation. It also served to highlight the importance of the whale watching industry – as 20,000 of the mammals head north on their annual migration. (VISION ONLY)

GREAT WHITE SHARK LEAPS OUT OF THE WATER JUST METRES FROM NSW SURFER

A great white shark has been photographed jumping out of the water off the New South Wales coast – as a local surfer obliviously rode a wave just metres away. Daniel Caban, a 20-year-old university student, was paddling onto a wave at Caves Beach, south of Newcastle, just moments before the shark breached the water about 2pm yesterday. “It was just me and one other guy out there,” “A big set came through, he got the first one, I got the second one, but neither of us had any idea what happened.” Mr Caban said the reality of his proximity to the predator still hadn’t sunk in. “I’ve never seen a shark in the water before,” he said. “Everyone else around here has their shark stories, but I’d never seen one.
