TEENS ALLEGEDLY CAUGHT STREET RACING AT LAKE MACQUARIE

Two p-platers have allegedly been caught travelling more than 65-kilometres over the speed limit at Lake Macquarie. The drivers – a 17-year-old boy from Bateau Bay and a 19-year-old from Terrigal – were pulled over by officers on the Pacific Highway at Blacksmiths yesterday afternoon. They’re accused of driving at 135-kilometres an hour in a 70 zone. Both had their licences suspended… charges are expected to be laid.

DRONE CAPTURES FOOTAGE OF GREAT WHITE AT REDHEAD

A drone has captured a rather close encounter between a surfer and a three-metre great white shark at Redhead south of Newcastle. The shark was spotted just before eight-thirty yesterday morning, and forced the closure of the beach for more than two hours. The drone was operating as part of the NSW Government’s shark surveillance trial, which will now run four hours a day until the end of January. (VISION ONLY)

DRAYTON MINE: PLANNING MINISTER DISMISSES REPORTS OF POLICY CHANGES

The state’s Planning Minister has dismissed claims the government’s planning to change legislation to cancel Anglo American’s proposed Drayton South Coal mine, in the Upper Hunter. News Limited reported the Baird Government is also considering implementing a significant buffer zone to protect nearby horse studs. In a statement, Rob Stokes says there is no change to government policy. The project is currently before the Planning Assessment Commission.

ROOFTOP DASH FOLLOWING ALLEGED BREAK-IN

A man is accused of running across roofs and jumping into a swimming pool to escape police, following an alleged break-in near Newcastle. Jason Flaus was refused bail in court today, after allegedly storming a home at Adamstown Heights, armed with a hook, and threatening three people inside. The 26-year-old is facing a string of charges, including assault and drug possession. (VISION ONLY)

FORMER SCRIPTURE TEACHER SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS JAIL

A former scripture teacher will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars for abusing 21 boys. 84-year-old Donald Greenaway has been sentenced to at least 15 years behind bars. He abused boys as a young five, in offences dating back to the 1960s – many of them committed at Woodlands Boys’ Home at Wallsend. Today a Newcastle District Court judge described Greenaway’s behaviour as “evil” and “despicable”.
