TRIBUTES FOR BIG DARRELL

Australia’s sporting community is mourning the death of one of its biggest voices, Darrell Eastlake who has passed away aged 75.

Big Darrell as he was known, died at a Central Coast nursing home after a battle with Alzeimer’s Disease and emphysema.

Eastlake spent more than four decades commentating on sport, most of his career with the Wide World of Sports, retiring on 2005. His signature booming voice was all over the Commonwealth Games, motorsport and State of Origin.

“Darrell was a larger-than-life character who loomed into Australian households with excitement and authenticity,” said Nine’s director of sport Tom Malone.

Darrell began his TV career with NBN in Newcastle, working with the likes of David Fordham, Mike Rabbitt, Leigh Maughan and the “Silver Fox” Arthur Adams.
