MAN INJURED WHEN YACHT HIT POWER LINES

A 67-year-old man is lucky to be alive after his yacht hit high-voltage power lines in South Ballina.

Emergency Services including police, ambulance, firefighters and lifesavers – were called to the boat’s location on the Richmond River around midday.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene, before being airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital.

“A 67-year-old male, as a result of that incident, suffered serious burns to his hands and his arms and also burns to his leg and chest.”

Roads and Maritime Services are investigating just how the craft came into contact with the active electricity lines.

“Very lucky. High voltage power lines are a high risk – quite easily we could have been dealing with a very tragic incident.”
