$12 MILLION CRUISE TERMINAL UNVEILED FOR NEWCASTLE HARBOUR

The design for a new Cruise Terminal in Newcastle has been released by the NSW Government and Port of Newcastle.

The $12.7-million design by GHD Woodhead will be built at the Channel Berth and will include passenger drop-off and pick up facilities, coach parking, and vessel provisioning.

The proposed facility is approximately 3000m2 in size and will enable the Port to receive more, and larger cruise ships.

According to the Australian Cruise Association, cruises currently inject around $11-million into the local economy every year, but the purpose-built terminal has the potential to deliver more economic value to the region.

The Hunter Research Foundation estimates total cruise infrastructure upgrades will contribute around $26.7 million and 76 jobs to the local economy.

The terminal has been funded by the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Hunter Infrastructure Investment Fund.

Construction will commence early in 2018, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.
