MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING POLICE NEAR LAKE MACQUARIE

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting police during a traffic stop near Lake Macquarie last night.

Police say they pulled the 48-year-old man over after he drove through a red light, with his 10-year-old son in the car, on The Boulevarde, Toronto.

He refused a roadside breath test before allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting the officer.

The officer suffered minor injuries including cuts to his arms, legs and fingers.

The driver was charged with a string of offences including resisting arrest and assaulting police.

He will be back in court in October.
