A shotgun has been fired into the front door of a home during a frightening home invasion in the Hunter Valley.

Police say three men, armed with a machete and a shotgun, forced their way through the front door of a house on Fourth Street in Weston, at around 10.30pm last night.

Once inside, the men demanded money from the 69-year-old male resident, before assualting him.

A 52-year-old woman in the home was also assaulted.

After leaving the scene with a small amount of cash, the men fired the shotgun into the front door, narrowly missing the female resident.

The trio were last seen driving away in a small silver or dark-coloured hatchback.
