MAN ARRESTED AFTER CAR DRIVEN INTO WATER AT BOAT RAMP

Two police officers have been treated for hypothermia, after being told a man was trapped in a submerged vehicle at Port Stephens.

Police say a silver sedan was driven about 15m into the water at the Henderson Park boat ramp in Lemon Tree Passage about 7.30pm yesterday.

A man, aged 34, allegedly told police he was a passenger in the vehicle and had escaped, but the driver was still trapped inside.

Two police officers entered the water and attempted to access the vehicle, but were unsuccessful.

After the submerged vehicle was winched closer to shore, it was established that there was no one inside.

The 34-year-old was arrested and taken for mandatory tests.
