AXE-HANDLE ALLEGEDLY USED IN ISLINGTON ASSAULT

A man has allegedly used an axe to damage a car and assault another man in a Newcastle suburb yesterday.

A 44-year-old man was sitting in his utility, parked outside a hotel on George Street in Islington just before 5pm when a second man, aged 30, left the hotel and got into his green Toyota Camry that was parked in front of the ute.

Police say the driver of the ute became annoyed when a car in front didn’t leave immediately so he allegedly threw a sandwich at the vehicle and got out to abuse the driver.

An argument has taken place, and the 44-year-old has allegedly grabbed an axe from the rear tray of his ute and used it to smash the driver’s-side window, windscreen and roof of the Camry.

Police also accuse the man of leaning into the Camry and striking the driver in the face with the handle of the axe.

He then returned to his ute and drove away.

The Camry driver was taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries.

Highway Patrol later stopped the ute in New Lambton just before 9:30pm, and the driver was charged a number of offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and damaging property.

The man will appear in Newcastle Local Court on August 31.
