MAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTS POLICE ON THE MID NORTH COAST

A man remains under police guard after allegedly assaulting a police officer following an incident on the Mid North Coast on the weekend.

Police were patrolling the ‘Winter Music Festival’ in Bellingen just before midday on Saturday, when a Holden Commodore was seen speeding through a crossing, narrowly missing pedestrians.

Police accuse the male driver of then crossing onto the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing a police vehicle, before crashing into concrete bollards in Short Street Lane.

The driver, aged 34, then ran from the car, but a member of the public tackled and held him until police arrived.

The man then suffered a medical episode, and was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus.

The driver allegedly assaulted police on the way to the hospital, where he remains under police guard.

Charges are expected to be laid when he is released.
