22-YEAR-OLD TO FACE COURT AFTER 5-HOUR MAITLAND STANDOFF

A five-hour standoff in the Hunter Valley yesterday has ended without incident.

Police were patrolling Maize Street in Tenambit at around 9:30am yesterday, when officers claim they saw a man run from a Nissan Patrol parked near a cemetery.

Police pursued the man on foot to Card Crescent in Maitland, where he allegedly broke into a unit and refused to come out.

Local police officers, along with the rescue unit, specialist police and negotiators were called in to assist in the incident.

After five hours, the man left the unit and was arrested.

The 22-year-old was charged with a range of offences including two counts of enter enclosed land without lawful excuse, destroy or damage property, and break & enter a house.

Police allege the Nissan Patrol was stolen from Shortland last month.

He was refused bail in Maitland Local Court today and will appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow.
