BUMPER SIGHTINGS IN WHALE CENSUS
All eyes were on the ocean today, as keen whale spotters gathered at Port Macquarie’s lighthouse for the annual whale census.
Tacking Point was one of five locations in New South Whales taking part in the simultaneous count – organised by marine research group ORCCA and National Parks.
The local tally was expected to reach 200.
“Looking back at our records over the last few years, the progressive increase in those numbers and it correlates really closely with the whale population so it’s about 10% more whales sighted on this census day as the previous year, and so on,” the National Parks & Wildlife Service’s Andy Marshall said.
Up to 30,000 humpbacks are expected to migrate up the east coast this year.
