WOMAN DIES IN UPPER HUNTER CRASH

A head-on crash in the upper Hunter has claimed the life of a woman in her 60s.

Around 7:30am, a northbound Hyundai collided with a southbound Mercedes on the New England Highway, approximately 10 kilometres north of Scone.

A 62-year-old Queensland woman, who was driving the Hyundai was critically injured. She died a short time later.

A young girl, aged 2, who was a passenger in the car, sustained serious injuries.

It is understood the pair are members of the same family.

A 51-year-old woman from Wingen, who was the driver and sole occupant of the Mercedes, was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by emergency services.

She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
