YOUNG GIRL CRITICAL WITH TETANUS

A seven-year-old girl is in a critical condition after contracting the potentially deadly disease, tetanus.

She was transferred from Lismore Base Hospital to the Lady Cilento Hospital in Brisbane on Wednesday.

It was just one day before a high-profile anti-vaccination advocate spoke in Mullumbimby, which has the lowest vaccination rates in Australia.

North Coast Public Health Assistant Director Greg Bell said the case highlights the importance of vaccination.

“It’s something that really shouldn’t happen in this day and age. It’s something that with vaccination, is preventable.”

There have only been three cases of tetanus on the North Coast since 2003.
