VALE MICHAEL RAUCH

Veteran NBN News cameraman Michael Rauch passed away last night after a brave battle with cancer.

Michael, who was 57, began his career with NBN News in 1984 as a video tape operator and then worked his way behind the camera to eventually become the station’s Senior Cameraman, a position he held until 2015.

Michael was behind the lens to document the big stories. His pictures of the Newcastle Earthquake were beamed across the globe. He was there for the Newcastle Knights 1997 Grand Final celebrations, and the Jets in 2008. He captured stunning pictures and interviews as the city went under water during the Pasha Bulker storm. Michael had a big impact on the little stories too. He carried a true sense of compassion for someone doing it tough. He was proud of his city and proud of the people who live here.

Career wise, Michael’s greatest legacy is the wisdom he passed on to a legion of camera operators and journalists. Many of those took his words and advice to network TV stations across Australia and the world.

Michael was a friend to many.

He is survived by his wife Bronwyn, and boys Nick and Dan.
