INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY INTO EMERGENCY LANDING

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has begun an investigation into yesterday’s emergency landing at Newcastle Airport.

Smoke was detected in the cockpit of a Virgin Australia passenger plane about half an hour into its flight from Port Macquarie to Sydney.

The aircraft diverted to Williamtown and landed without incident, two people were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

As part of the investigation, the bureau will interview the flight crew, obtain an engineering report and gather additional information.

A report will be released by June.
