Shark nets will be trialled off five far north coast beaches, between Ballina and Evans Head, this summer.
Legislation fast-tracking the controversial trial was passed in State Parliament overnight.
The DPI now hope to deploy the mesh nets – similar to those used between Newcastle and Wollongong – before the Christmas holidays.
Further details regarding the six-month trial will be finalised at a shark advisory group meeting in Ballina this Friday.
