ELDERLY TARGETED IN TELEPHONE FRAUD ON THE GOLD COAST

Gold Coast police are investigating after a number of elderly people have been the targets of attempted fraud over the last 48 hours.

According to police, victims have been called by a male who states he works at a business, and alleges someone has attended the store and tried to use their card to make large purchases.

He then asks if have they authorised this, and when the victims say no, he tells them to call their bank and cancel the card.

When the victims then call their bank, the alleged fraudster stays on the line, making the initial call still active. He then pretends to be the bank and collects their personal details.

Victims have later discovered that they never called their banks, and their bank isn’t aware of an issue with the card.

To date, police say the fraudster hasn’t been successful.

Police advise people to contact their bank immediately if they have any doubts involving bank transactions.
