12 people were forced to flee a three-storey building in Newcastle’s CBD this morning, after a fire broke out in a unit on top of the Family Hotel.
Smoke filled the apartments above the newly-opened Hunter Street pub at around 6am, before the flames were extinguished by firefighters.
It’s thought the fire was sparked by someone smoking a cigarette in bed.
